History of crochet: from origin to present 

The origins of this ancient art are still uncertain. Some believe that its emergence took place in prehistory, others believe that it was 1500 years before Christ and there are those who say that crochet has existed since human beings started civilizations. Be that as it may, this handicraft has been in history for thousands of years.

Crochet as we know it today has its origins in the 16th century and one of the most accepted theories about its beginning shows that it started in Arabia, in the Middle East, reaching the whole world due to the Mediterranean trade routes, becoming extremely popular in tribes in South America.

Then came the “air crochet”, a French technique that used only thread and needle, as we know it. After all, previously there was a “tambour”, as in embroidery, see the example in the image above.
